1. put the dongle into the 3rd controller slot, it fits best there.2. the first time you pop in a video dvd disc, there will be a slight delay before anything happens. This is because the usb dongle containing the IR tranciever also contains a .5MB ROM used for *something* (yet unknown) in DVD playback. 3. this device is region specific -- do not buy one from the US if you live in the UK, it won't play region 2 DVD's. 4. the remote is surprisingly high quality. big, light, excellent overall button response and IR response. 5. no power or eject buttons, annoying but forgivable. 6. the dvd playback application included on the xbox puts out a great picture and fast-forwards and rewinds effortlessly. 7. much to my surprise, the xbox was able to handle several rented discs scratched to the point of being unplayable by me middle end sony player without a hitch. 8. if you don't have a DVD player, buy this thing. it's wonderful. yes, the money you're paying is mostly liscensing, but c'mon, [amt] for a CD that costs at most [amt] in it's entirty? no complaints here.
Rating: - Great
I bought this remote a few days after x-mass, I must say I am very happy with it. People wonderd about Microsoft putting out a seprate remote for just dvd playback. I found out that is is because if they were to include it in the xbox (built in) they would of had to pay a fee to have the dvd logo, thus making the price go up on this already expensive system. When you buy one of these remotes you are paying that fee. The remote is shaped like a RCA remote control, you can put the receiver in the 4th controller port and leave it in until you play a 4 player game. The remote's buttons glow in the dark making it easier to operate in the dark. It has a zoom feature unheard of in home dvd players (10x!), It also has all the other options as a regular dvd player does. The picture is great, as well as the sound. There is no eject button but I think we can live without that. Bottem line, if you don't have a DVD player and are looking for an inexpensive one, buy this. If you have a dvd player already get this anyway. It makes a great dvd player for the bedroom.
Rating: - Remotes that cost EXTRA enable a better XBOX!
The reason the DVD Movie Playback Kit costs extra is to keep the price of the XBOX lower, and have a better machine at a lower cost. Every single DVD player(any make)must pay a "licensing" fee the the MOTION PICTURE STUDIOS of AMERICA, by not having it included in the "standard" XBOX that fee is avoided by people who have no desire to ever play a DVD in the XBOX. This allows Microsoft to have a more advanced machine for the price then the competition. If you want to play DVDs simply pay the (money) and use this PACK(it includes the afore mentioned licensing fees) All DVD players are much easier to use with a remote and you will not look like a bumbling fool going through all sorts of menus trying to play the disc as you wish. (...) This is a well thought out concept/plan and works perfectly in the real world. (...)
