Rating: - Buy the Album - I was Not Disappointed
I saw Man of La Mancha this weekend. It took my breath away. From what I gather reading up on it after the fact, the production did not originally get good reviews. I don't know why. The musical I saw was wonderful -- moving, beautifully sung, and superbly acted. I had only seen Brian Stokes Mitchell on television. Of course, he has a rich voice; it may not be a "big" as some others (e.g. Richard Kiley), but what really impressed me was his delivery of the songs. The nuances he brought to each phrase moved me -- sometimes, close to tears. I could not wait to buy the album. In reference to remarks made by some previous raters, I will agree that Stokes' rendition on the album does not deliver quite the same emotion as what I saw at the Martin Beck Theater. However, had I not seen him live, I would not have noticed any deficiency. It just that he was so much better on stage. Perhaps, he took note of the critics' comments and improved as a result of them; not everyone can do that. More power to Stokes. I was amazed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio. She has an unusual voice for Broadway, and I think that is one of the reasons I liked her portrayal of Aldonza. Her acting was so good that I forgot who she was; she was Aldonza. Perfect. I did not know the songs that Aldonza sings as well as those by Don Quixote. So, I did not have any notion of what to expect. I can only say the her songs on the album did not disappoint me either. I say this is a great album for any fan of Man of La Mancha and the musical theater.
Rating: - Wonderful show, unfair critics.
I feel all the critics writing negative reviews of this show are being quite unfair to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. I watched "Man of La Mancha" from orchestra seats at the Martin Beck theater on December the 19th of last year, and let me tell you I saw the superb talent of this woman up close. Mastrantonio brought a great deal of emotion to her role, esepecially in the song "Aldonza." Only those of you who can sing with such power and such an octave and repeat the performance 8 times a week has a right to be so critical. The show was amazing, and the idealism found in Cervante's writing is not lost in another revival of the adaptation. Brian Stokes Mitchell gave a perfect performance and the songs are just beautiful. Everyone who had a role in this production did a great job and it inspired those audience members to the point where tears were in our eyes and romance was in our hearts. Obviously this world is way too cynical for the likes of Don Quixote.
Rating: - A poor recording of a brilliant score.
This is one of the few cases where the representation of the score in the theater is actually superior to what was preserved for posterity on the disc. This is a very poor, almost unlistenable recording; it captures every flaw in Brian Stokes Mitchell's singing voice and delivery (his acting choices make some sense in the greater context of the show, but are completely disconnected from reality on the recording), it presents Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as completely wrong for the part (never once does she sound like a gutter whore, a "kitchen slut reeking of sweat"), the sad deterioration of Ernie Sabella's once more robust instrument, and even the bizarre decisions made by director Jonathan Kent or musical director Robert Billig (the most horrendous being the mutilation of "The Impossible Dream," changing it from a solid character number into a shameless, untruthful applause-grabbing attempt on Mitchell's part). Only Mark Jacoby, in his small role as the Padre truly comes off well on the disc, but he--and every other performer on the disc, without exception--is surpassed by the fantastic original cast members, whose thrilling renditions live on in the 1965 recording. That one is a must-own for all musical theatre (and music) lovers, but this recording should only be purchased by die-hard fans of this production. Everyone else will find it an embarrassing, soulless attempt at capturing on record one of the most moving and rapturous of musicals.
