Rating:  - I'LL SEE YOU ON THE DUB SIDE OF THE MOON
After reading about this CD in Playboy, I just had to order it. Being a true PF fan, I've enjoyed hearing their music covered by everyone from Marilyn Manson to Wyclef Jean (and a lot more folks on the recent An All Star Lineup Peforming The Songs Of Pink Floyd CD [needs a better title]). Having recently purchased 2 live PF CDs (where they perform Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety in London on 02/20/72 and in Sapporo on 03/12/72 before DSOTM was released) to go along with my DSOTM and Pulse CDs, I thought that this would make an excellent addition (and I was right). Dub was lovingly produced and carefully crafted to recast DSOTM with a reggae flavor (even down to approximate running times for each song). Be sure to check out the beginnning of Money. The 4 bonus tracks only add to the overall atmosphere. I was amused to note that the cover sticker claims that this CD is Wizard Of Oz compatible (which is why I checked the times in the first place - nudge, nudge, wink, wink). My only question to the naysaying PF purists is : What were you doing here looking in the first place? I'll see you on the Dub Side Of The Moon.
Rating: - The ART rock album and THE Definitive Cover
Peter Tosh and Bob Marley would have approved!Art rock. Pink Floyd defines the field. Dark Side of the Moon spent 20 years on the Billboard top 100 (I remember the article in BB - duly noted as an unprecedented event for the pop/rock genre). Dub Side applies the Reggae take (one of the fine R&R genres that has not -or cannot- "sell out") to The Art Rock icon. There are few who would contest the position in pop culture that DSOTHM has established. Until now there were no covers of any substance. As I said, until now. Dub Side of the Moon is a fine cover. It reinterprets Roger Waters's guitar riffs in a wicked and honest manner. There are a few places where you can hear a song or two (Amazon, for one) and any rabid fan of the original will stop doubting and start listening within a minute! I may be wrong, but I think that this album will fare as well as the original did (for at least 10 years- and I hope longer).

I'm was driving to work early in the morning when I heard a reggae version of Us and Them playing on the radio. I was amazed. I could have never imagined how good a reggae interpretation of that song could be. I was sure that I was listening to Frankie Paul, but could not believe he was singing a Pink Floyd song. I was able to find the CD that afternoon and have been listening to it over and over again ever since. This album works on so many levels, the translation into reggae is seamless. I love reggae, but have been disappointed in much of the modern roots that has come out in recent years, so to get a chance to hear artists like Frankie Paul, Ranking Joe, Sluggy Ranks and The Meditations over hardcore roots tracks has been a blessing. The production value on Dub Side is excellent and the dub tracks at the end are tough. After hearing Dub Side I have already picked up the Easy Stars All-Star's other original productions, Easy Star Volume One and Two, and have been very impressed as well. Easy Star Records is doing something special, don't sleep on them!!!
