Average Rating:
Rating: - A consistent release from one of today's better bands
This is the second Foo Fighters cd I've picked up, the other being "Colour and the Shape" and I must say it's the better of the two in my opinion. While you won't find any perfect songs like "Everlong" or "Hey Johnny Park!", you also won't find any tracks like "My Poor Brain" or "Enough Space": the songs that were just filler till you got to the really good ones. The song writing on "One By One" isn't as strong as the best songs off Colour but it's much more consistent and as a result, much more enjoyable. Some of the standout tracks are the single "All My Life", the ballad "Tired of You", "Halo", the Queens of the Stone Age-esque "Low", and the epic "Come Back". A lot of people like to pick through Grohl's lyric in search of references to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain but I give more credit than that to Dave; I'm sure he's gotten over this and I think it's pretty stupid that anytime he uses the word "ghost" or writes about something in the past, everyone assumes it's in reference to Kurt Cobain. While Nirvana was a great band, I think the demise of it was one of the best things for Dave Grohl; it got him out from behind the drumset and back on guitar writing his own music. Now if people would just let the whole Nirvana thing rest... Also, if you can find the special edition of this cd with the packaged DVD, I highly recommend you pick that up. The DVD contains the video for "All My Life", the song "The Only One" (or maybe it was something else? It was used in the soundtrack for some film not too long ago) and some behind the scenes footage of the band. Definitely worth the purchase.
Rating: - The Foos WILL Rock You!
I have been a fan of the Foo Fighters since the release of their debut album, and I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of "One By One" for quite some time. After purchasing it yesterday afternoon, I was finally able to sit down and listen to it in its entirety during the early evening. In a word-WOW! There are many reasons why they have been a favorite band of mine for a long time, but one important factor in that is that they have the ability to make me fall in love with their songs upon first hearing them. As I have gushed to many of my friends in the past, the Foos are a band that just keep getting better and better all the time-and this album proves it. While I love the whole cd, my favorite stand out tracks are "Times Like These", "Disenchanted Lullaby", "Halo", "Lonely As You", "Come Back"....I feel these songs in particular really capture the sincere raw passion and yearning (even anger) in Dave Grohl's appealing voice. Like many musicians, he pulls on real life experiences of love and loss and fuels them into incredible songs that every person on the planet can relate to feeling at one time or another in their own lives. This album is a little bit darker than the Foos previous albums, but that in no way is a bad thing. All four members are amazing musicians, and their talents shine brightly in each of these wonderful tunes. It's great in this day of generic cookie cutter groups to see that there are some, like the Foos, who have not lost their rock and roll sensibilities; they are simply a fantastic, no frills rock band that create excellent sonic soundscapes. This is one of the best albums I have purchased this year, and I can't recommend it highly enough...the Foos WILL rock you!:-)
Rating: - All Your Life You Will Never Find A Better CD
If anyone ever comes up to you and says that the Foo Fighters' newest album, One By One, rocks, slap them and say, "That's an understatement you heathen." To say the this cd rocks doesn't do it justice. You would think with extrordinary albums like "The Colour and The Shape" and "There is Nothing Left To Loose" that it couldn't get any better. You're thinking wrong. As soon as you pop in 1X1 you're blown out of your mind. Listening to the first song, "All My Life", is like watching the most intense suspense film you can find. The tension builds up in the verses and throws you around like a football at a 49er's game in the chorus. But it doesn't stop there. you might have to sit down to indure the intense guitar face-off in the next track "Low." But all this rocking isn't in vein. They throw in great ballads like the soothing "Tired of You" and the harmonious "Lonely as You" that takes a turn from a warm ballad to a loud screaming power tune. One of the highlights of this cd is the exit track. It starts with a Bush-esque guitar riff then takes you into a fullfledged Foo melody. Then when you think the song is over it comes back, then back again, better each time. The cd is a beautiful mix of drummer Taylor Hawkin's vibrant and vigorous drums, bassist Nate Mendel's fulfilling and tentalizing bass, guitarists Chris Shiflett and Dave Grohl's evocative and zealous guitars, that blend perfectly with Grohl's at times soothing voice and at other times his powerful screaming that doens't take it to far and doesn't let him off as a sissy screamer. One By One may be the best album of the year. In an interview drummer Hawkins said, "We're not trying to save rock 'n' roll. We're leaving that to Scott Weiland." When you don't try is when you accidently succeed in something you're not trying to do. 9.5/10 Highlights: "All My Life" "Lonely As You" "Tired of You" "Disenchanted Lullabye" "Comeback"
