Rating: - Near-perfect introduction for the uninitiated (like myself)
I think everybody who lives in America and owns a radio or television has heard an Aerosmith song, it's near impossible not to have. Like many, I knew of a handful of catchy, rockin' songs from classic rock radio and mp3 downloads. I was also somewhat confused as why not one retrospective had songs from their early and latter days on it, then I found out it was due to them changing labels in the mid-80s. This is the only Aerosmith compilation to feature songs from their Columbia and Geffen days on it and it makes a great buy for people who are interested in exploring their back catalogue, or just want those famous radio hits. A seasoned Aerosmith fan might want this for the bonus tracks, the Run D.M.C. version of 'Walk This Way' and the two new songs, the single, 'Girls Of Summer' and the ballad 'Lay It Down. This also features the single from the Armageddon movie, 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing.' A diehard might already have the soundtrack for that song or even the Run D.M.C. cd too but they're always nice to have grouped with other Aerosmith material. The remastered sound is loud and clear, a definite plus for audiophiles. The only glaring errors I see off-hand are the omissions of the popular 'Eat The Rich,' 'Toys In The Attic,' and their cover of 'Come Together,' songs even a beginner like me has heard on the radio. The latter two appear on the European import of this same compilation, but unfortunately you have to pay that European import price. Why the domestic release left those two songs off is beyond me. Aside from those minor negatives, this is the definitive Aerosmith compilation for beginners interested in America's ultimate rock 'n roll band.
Rating: - O, Yeah! O. O.K.?
Aerosmith is one of those artists' that you get so use to that their music, is great no matter what the material. And on O, Yeah! Their ultimate greatest hits and classics along with the recent hits are found here, but with that said this album just is their "Young Lust"-anthology all over again minus the live versions and studio recordings, but don't get me wrong, O, Yeah is still a good hits package, on this hits package we find, hits like ones you'd expect like "What It Takes", "Janie's Got A Gun", "Cryin'", "Jaded" and "Dude(Looks Like A Lady)", you know the hits, and there are also additions from "Nine Lives" like "Fallin' In Love" and "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" which appears and an Aerosmith album for the first time ever(remember the song originally appeared on the Armageddon soundtrack), and plus their two new songs, "Lay It Down" and I can't believe I'm going to say this, the pointless current song "Girls Of Summer" which doesn't sound like Aerosmith it sounds more like an 'N Sync-type song. And also the album is missing some songs not alot, like "Hole In My Soul", "Fly Away From Here" and "Sunshine". But with all of that the album is still good and that is why I bought it, because it's Aerosmith enough said. Grade B.
Rating: - How many more "Greatest Hits" packages do we need?
Aerosmith is a classic rock dream. We've been blessed to hear them rock and roll since their 1st release in 1973. With this 2002 release "O Yeah - Ultimate Aero Hits"... I can't help but sit back and scratch my head and wonder. Since 1991, the band and their label(s) have put out 7 (count 'em... seven) "Best Of" compilations, including this one... others included "Young Lust - Aerosmith Anthology", "Pandora's Box", "Big Ones", "Universal Masters Collection" (Import), "Gems", "Box Of Fire"... not to mention their first "Greatest Hits" (from 1980) and their live "Classics" I & II. All Aerosmith is classic in my book - some just more so than others. With a band that's had staying power over the last 30 years - this is no easy task to put all their best stuff on 2 discs. With ANY best of package you'll find some hits as well as some misses. Some of those MISSES would be "Make It", "Somebody", "Toys In The Attic", "No More, No More", "Train Kept A Rollin", "Pandora's Box", "Sick As A Dog", "Young Lust", "Kings & Queens", "Permanent Vacation", "Eat The Rich", "Shut Up & Dance", Taste Of India". You'll find on disc 2 a few remixes and different versions of some of their finer tunes like "Pink", "Walk This Way", "Just Push Play"... as well as 2 new songs "Girls Of Summer" and "Lay It Down". You'll also find that disc 1 rocks harder and disc 2 mellows with power ballads galore. This is good stuff and in my opinion it's probably their best career spanning 2 disc set. But, do you REALLY need it?
