Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - How Anyone Could Dislike This Cd is Beyond Me!!
The Dixie Chicks are by far my favorite artists. It's not hard to figure out why they've had so much success thus far. Their music is honest, full bodied, and still truly country music. I originally bought this CD for my mother as a Christmas present, but we both started listening to it and I became obsessed with it. It's one of those Cds that you think you will never listen to but then you begin to like it more and more and then eventually you know all the words to all the songs. The Chicks have a nice balance of slow and fast songs. Songs like There's Your Trouble, I can Love You Better, Tonight The Heartache's On Me, Let 'Er Rip, and Give It Up or Let Me Go have fast wild beats that make you want to get on your feet and belt out the tune at the top of your lungs. They have a lot soul and melody in them, but at the same time, lots of banjo and fiddle to keep it true to country. Their ballads like You Were Mine and Once You've Loved somebody are full of emotion and deep, robust music that lay it on the table and grab the listener and force them to sing along. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to their music in awe and appreciation of their unique and immense talent. their music overwhelms me. This CD is absolutely excellent! If you buy Wide Open Spaces you won't be sorry.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Dixie Chicks are the greatest!
It was 1998,that the whole world was introduced to the 'new' Dixie Chicks-Natalie Maines,Martie Seidel and Emily Robison. All I can say firstly is-what an introduction! 'Wide Open Spaces'(in my opinion)was not only the greatest album of 1998,but possibly one of the greatest albums ever made. Not only are all three gals incredible musicians, but also have three of the most wonderful voices ever-deep,beautiful vocals from lead singer Natalie Maines, backed with rich harmony vocals from sisters Martie and Emily will have most people hooked from the very start. There is only one writing contribution from 'the Chicks' on this album-'You Were Mine',written by Emily and Martie. Listen to this song and you will notice the writing talent,as this song will have most people on the verge of tears. If you're feeling sad-listen to 'I Can Love You Better','There's Your Trouble' and Am I The Only One....',they'll perk ya right up! But if you want to feel sad,try 'You Were Mine','Tonight,The Heartache's On Me' and 'Once You've Loved Somebody'. I guess what i'm trying to say is that there is something on this album for everyone-as it's the kind of album that can't help but make you feel good about yourself, despite some sad songs. The highlight though,(without a doubt)is 'Wide Open Spaces'-the message being never to give up on your dreams. Buy this album immediately-I sincerely doubt you'll regret it. Chicks Rule!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - More than just a few pretty faces....
I can clearly remember the first time I heard of the Dixie Chicks. I was working at a local radio station and the girls were out promoting their first single "I Can Love You Better". I remember everyone saying that the Chicks weren't going to go anywhere and that they were just a bunch of pretty faces. I had a different opinion though, I loved their music and just knew that they were exactly what country radio needed. These were three strong women, who wrote their own music, played their own instruments, and had voices like angels. Lead singer, Natalie Maines (daughter of legendary guitartist Lloyd Maines) has one of those voices that people can only pray for. It's amazing how she can bend her voice to the lyrics, going from powerful to soft in a matter of seconds. The gals's got one hell of a voice. It's pure country!

The best tracks on the cd are "You Were Mine" (which was written by sisters Emily Robison and Martie Seidel), "Loving Arms" (which SHOULD'VE been released! It's awesome!), "Let 'Er Rip", and the Maria McKee penned "Am I The Only One (Who's Ever Felt This Way)". Another great song is the remake of Bonnie Raitt's big hit "Give It Up or Let Me Go". The song shows off Natalie's powerful voice as well the the sisters' instrumental capabilities.

The Dixie Chicks are now one of the biggest groups on the planet and it all started with the 1998 release of "Wide Open Spaces". With the help of singles such as "I Can Love You Better", "Wide Open Spaces", and "There's Your Trouble" the cd went on to win several Grammy's and CMA's. The singles also solidified the group as a top-selling country act and proved that yes, you can be pretty and sing too.
