Rating: - Great printing quality
I used this ink on my Compaq IJ900 for three years, then bought a new printer (Lexmark Z65). I bought a Lexmark because I am so impressed with the printing quality of the Compaqs and Lexmarks. I've now gotten the IJ900 set up for my husband and opened a black ink cartridge that has been sealed in its wrapper for over a year--works perfect! I soaked the color cartridge, that had been sitting open in the old printer for over a year, in water for a few minutes, dried it, then reinstalled it and it all works great. Yes, the cartridges are expensive, but you pay for what you get. Each time you buy a new cartridge you are getting a new printer head, which is why the print is so crisp and clear. I've seen the output from other printers and I'm not impressed. To me, that's a waste of ink--to not have a great looking print.
I use refill kits two or three times for each cartridge with no problem, then replace the cartridge. I do use refill inks that are specific for the printer, not generic kits.
All in all, I think these cartridges (this black and the 12A1980--Color) work great!
I've also had no smear problems and use everything from cheap paper to glossy photo paper to index cards. I make my own Christmas and greeting cards and they all turn out great and with no smearing.
Rating: - Great print quality, fair price, but there's a catch...
The quality of this ink is great. It's indeed water proof, but obviously the paper has to be of good quality as well. The price is somewhat on the high side and can add up quickly if you print a lot of full text pages. Most likely you're going to use this cartridge in a color printer, so better buy a few ahead of time. Unfortunately, Lexmark's cartridges are proprietary so you won't find any 3rd party brands on the market (Compaq Printer = Lexmark Printer). This will ensure that Lexmark has full control over the price you pay. Lexmark's proprietary design isn't flawless. Should a paper get jammed at the printhead (by a corner curled by a bad feed), you'll have to pray that the head wasn't damaged. Be sure not to leave the printer (cartridge) unused for more than two weeks, otherwise the ink will dry on the heads. This can sometimes be solved by placing the cartridge in a dish with COLD water for about 5 minutes. But usually it's the end of the cartridge - so much for a 3/4th full cartridge! If you encounter a problem with the cartridge (or the printer), don't bother calling Lexmark's support number. You'll have to deal with ill-manered and inexperienced technicians.
