Unfortunately, by watching the previews you know exactly what will happen in the movie. Unfortunately, nothing in the movie will lead you to believe otherwise. Reese successfully gives mixed messages and strings along the two men in her life who want to marry her (or stay married to her) despite every stunt she pulls and every lousy thing she says and does. She insults her hick town, insults the people in it, badly hurts the old friend who was nicest to her, and tries her best to keep both guys as long as possible. She desperately wants her hillbilly hubby to sign the divorce papers...until he threatens to do it. She's so in love with her fiancee...yet tries to call her ex during wedding preparation. And the ex is trying to better himself to become worthy of Mrs. Carmichael...yet he never makes a play for her, and lets her believe he's still nothing more than a beer drinking, cow tipping redneck. No doubt he read the golden rule when it comes to women: You'll appear more intriguing if you don't look so interested. She's wishier-washier than a fence riding politician, but she'll come out smelling like roses. The best parts of the movie involved Patrick Dempsey and Candice Bergen. I was rooting for them the entire time. Unfortunately, they weren't in the movie enough. This movie could've been much better had it strayed from the conventional, and made them more of the focal point, rather than showing its audience every redneck stereotype in existence. We've already seen it. 3 stars for giving your brain a rest and for having "sister" of Rose Red in it. Take away 1 star for the movie being as predictible as possible and the ending, which I don't want to give away. Very tacky ending.

The trailer made me want to see this movie. It had led me to believe I would be seeing a madcap screwball comedy of the gag-a-minute variety. Sweet Home Alabama is none of the above. It's a standard heartwarmer. The gags, such as they are, could have been focused to better effect. For whatever reason, they weren't, and they may not have been intended to be. Screwball comedies aren't the end-all-be-all. In fact, they're quite superficial... but then so are standard heartwarmers, and they aren't funny. If they didn't want a screwball comedy, they shouldn't have advertised one, that's all.For what it's worth, Reese Witherspoon does a great job. Her character is very like someone I know, and I'm sure convinced. It's a pity here effort is lost in a cliché. Even more's the pity, cuz if they got the guy who edited the trailer to edit the movie, they might have had something.
Rating: - Sweet Home Alabama is not that Sweet
I watched this movie with my husband after we had heard all the rave reviews about this movie and expected something funny, comical and just clever. Sadly disappointed, because you have to watch almost the entire movie to find out what drove Melanie and her husband to be apart for 7 years!!! It had some humorous scenes, but nothing outstanding. Candice Bergen plays a typical "Murphy Brown" role but as a mayor, which really does her no justice. Its just "Murphy Brown" who is a mayor, has a young eligible and handsome son and is suspicious of who he is marrying. I can safely say, I will not watch this movie again.
