Average Rating: Rating: - The Americanization of Vaughan Williams Ralph Vaughan Williams A SEA SYMPHONY is a cinematic work that incorporates the poetry of Walt Whitman. The text is well tendered in Vaughan Williams innate sense of orchestral and choral writing and in surprisingly fine solo vocal lines. Good as previous recorded performances have been, this performance by the Atlanta Symphony, Chorus and soloists is by far the first choice. The pompous, bloated sound by the British forces here are replaced by a very straight-forward, non-bombastic, simple paean to the Sea. The words are from an American poet and Robert Spano seems to honor that by conducting a crisp, brisk, yet eloquent, plangent reading of this lovely score. The forces are all superb - all performers, engineers, etc. A definite MUST for your colllection. Very Highly Recommended! Rating: - An adept new recording A life long love of the works of Vaughan Williams has placed three recordings of this symphony in my collection. This is by far the most emotional of those recordings evoking the feeling of the sea with the masterful tonal control of the ASO Chorus. Beautifully recorded by Telarc who never fail to please. I highly recommend this recording to new and old fans of the composers works. Wayne North Rating: - Spine-tingling What a recording! The musical imagery is uncanny: one feels the sea and hears the sea (without getting wet or sea sick, thank goodness!). This is one of the most moving classical albums I have ever heard. It prompted me to get out my headphones so I could really get inside the sound. I highly recommend this disc.
