Rating: - Fails to Ultimately Deliver
Admittedly, I was a Clinton supporter. I first read this book mostly because I had an interest in how 'the other half thought.' So I went in with an open mind, expecting to have my beliefs challenged by what I was told was a thought provoking portrayal. However, for all of those who can relate to my story, do not invest in this book. Although Patterson is a gifted story teller, that is simply all this book is- stories. Patterson spends an indordinate amount of time on Clintons personal life, and not enough adressing how his direct diplomatic decisions hurt America. In the end, this book is a worthwhile read for Republicans and anti-Clintonians who are looking to relate to a well regarded figure. However, if like me, you are looking to rethink your 20th century analyzations, this book is not as good as advertised.
Rating: - They say the problems come from the details
This book has plenty of details! We've heard the stories and been given the spin, but it looks like the hopes of Clinton being the people's President have truly evaporated with this book-if it's true. Right wingers have long told stories about Hillary's ravings, Bill's sex-obsessed attitude, and the ignorance of geo-political realities. Until now, I've always written those claims off as Republican jealousy, but it looks like it might have been the truth. I look back now and wonder if the Dereliction of Duty was really his (after all, we'd been warned), or if it was a dereliction on the part of those who voted and supported the Clintons? This is not the typical political jealousy book, and I suggest everyone read it asap!
Rating: - All too brief
There are several meaty ancedotes, all quite believable, from someone clearly in a position to have witnessed them. They confirm everything we imagined about this president and his minions. However, the hundred twenty or so pages written by the author are sandwiched between a lengthy third-party preface and third-party appendices, like hamburger extender, to make a 215 page book. In short, the meat of this book is disappointingly all too brief. ...
